Practical APQP guidance

What is APQP?

Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) is a structured method for planning the quality activities needed to deliver a product that meets customer requirements from launch through production. It connects program management, design, manufacturing, quality, purchasing, suppliers, and the customer around one controlled plan.

Customer-specific requirements define the actual deliverables, timing, approval route, and submission evidence. Start with the current requirements in the customer contract, purchase order, portal, and applicable AIAG or customer manual.

The five APQP phases

Each phase produces information the next phase needs. Keep the records aligned as the product and process mature.

01

Plan & define

Confirm requirements, feasibility, risks, scope, timing, and ownership.

Plan the program
02

Product design

Develop and verify a design that meets its intended requirements.

Learn & improve

Use production results to correct issues and improve the next launch.

Keep documents connected

One process. One source of truth.

A process step missing from one APQP document is a warning sign. The team may be controlling a risk it never analyzed, or analyzing a risk at a step the process does not actually use.

  1. Process flowMaps the actual route.
  2. PFMEAAnalyzes process risk.
  3. Control PlanDefines the work controls.
  4. PPAPDemonstrates readiness.

A better working habit

Make the right work easier to repeat.

  • Use the latest approved customer requirements and record their revision.
  • Assign one accountable owner and due date to every deliverable and open action.
  • Walk the actual process before finalizing the flow, PFMEA, or Control Plan.
  • Use the same process-step names and numbers across connected records.
