How to complete Measurement System Analysis (MSA) Studies
MSA evidence shows whether the measurement system is suitable for its intended product or process decision.
Complete the fields
- Characteristic and decision
- Identify the characteristic, tolerance or acceptance criterion, and what decision the measurement supports.
- Measurement system definition
- Identify gauge or test equipment, fixture, software, method, environment, appraisers, and calibration status.
- Study type and procedure
- State the study used—such as variable gauge repeatability and reproducibility, bias, linearity, stability, or attribute agreement—and the approved procedure.
- Parts, appraisers, and trials
- Record part identifiers, appraisers, number of trials, and selection rationale. Parts should represent the process variation needed for the study.
- Results and acceptance decision
- Report the calculated results, acceptance criteria, conclusion, limitations, and action if the system is not acceptable.
Step-by-step completion sequence
- Define the measurement decision and customer or internal acceptance criteria.
- Verify calibration and select a study type suitable for the measurement.
- Run the study under representative conditions using documented part, appraiser, and trial information.
- Analyze results according to the approved MSA method.
- Improve and repeat the study where needed before using the system as PPAP evidence.
PPAP control point: The customer’s current submission request, customer-specific requirements, and approved forms control. This guide explains a practical way to prepare the record; it does not authorize a substitute format or acceptance criterion.
